Bob's book list

Some years ago it occurred to me that no matter how much time I spent reading, it remained impossible to read all the great books in one's lifetime. By "great," I do not mean only the acknowledged classics reliably assigned in English literature and western civilization courses. I mean, more broadly, the universe of books which might be judged "worthwhile." Accordingly, it made sense to resolve only to read great books. (Of course, an occasional Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum or equivalent might be allowed, but more as an alternative to TV or a movie, than as an alternative to quality books.)

But mechanically reading through some received list of great books seemed coldly unimaginative. How would I allow for some serendipity, some exploration, some risk taking? Over time, it became clear that my real aim was to simply avoid marginal books; that in a sea of possibilities, I merely wanted to avoid time spent on the bottom 80%. So I came up with a selection algorithm that works for me. I typically read books which fall into one of three categories:

  1. Acknowledged "classics" from the humanities. When in doubt, the existence of a Cliff's Notes suggests that at least Cliff thought is was a classic. ;)
  2. Books by authors I have previously read. Some authors, like Jack London, Robert Persig, John Muir, and Richard Dawkins automagically qualify.
  3. Books recommended by three or more people I respect.
With this last point in mind, I humbly offer the following list- not of book recommendations per se- but simply my personal list of recently read books.  Your mileage may vary; mine certainly did. I'm sharing it in the intellectually open spirit of a university, hoping both that it will be of assistance to someone, and yet not invite ridicule for my simple taste in fiction, obvious nerdiness, or any other evident idiosyncrasy.

December 2005 update: Ten years after I wrote the comments above, I've added a fourth source of books to read: my kids. Their voracious appetite for books provides a large universe from which to pick, each offering the double pleasure of the book itself, and then the opportunity to discuss together. :)
